Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Indo-Aryan *bindúṣ, of uncertain further origin. Per Turner, it is likely a substrate borrowing cognate with उण्डुक "network", इन्दु "drop", इण्ड्व "(two) mats" वीटा "stick used in tipcat", वृन्त "stalk" and विटप "tree".
