From Proto-Indo-Aryan *prátʰas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *prátʰas, from Proto-Indo-European *pléth₂os (“breadth”). Cognate with Younger Avestan 𐬟𐬭𐬀𐬚𐬀𐬵 (fraθah), Ancient Greek πλάτος (plátos), Old Armenian լայն (layn).
