Inherited from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀧𑀇𑀝𑁆𑀞𑀸𑀡 (païṭṭhāṇa), from Sanskrit प्रतिष्ठान (pratiṣṭhā́na, foundation).[1] Related to पैठणी (paiṭhṇī, a type of sari). Compare Old Marathi 𑘢𑘿𑘨𑘝𑘱𑘭𑘿𑘞𑘰𑘡 (pratisthāna).
