Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘢𑘹𑘩𑘜𑘹 (pelaṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀧𑁂𑀮𑁆𑀮𑁂𑀇 (pellei), 𑀧𑁂𑀮𑁆𑀮𑀇 (pellaï), 𑀧𑀺𑀮𑁆𑀮𑀇 (pillaï), from Sanskrit प्रेरयति (prerayati, “to push on”). Compare Gujarati પ્રેરવું (prervũ), Hindustani پیلْنَا (pelnā) / पेलना (pelnā), Odia ପେଲିବା (peliba), Maithili पेलब (pēlab) / 𑒣𑒹𑒪𑒥 (pēlaba), Assamese পেলোৱা (pelüa).
