Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘢𑘹𑘛𑘲 (peḍhī), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀧𑁂𑀟𑁆𑀠 (*peḍḍha) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀇𑀓𑀸- (-ikā-) (compare Sanskrit पीठ (pīṭha)). Cognate with Gujarati પેઢી (peḍhī), Sindhi پيڍِي / पेढी / 𑋒𑋥𑋋𑋢 (peḍhī).
