Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀧𑀝𑁆𑀞𑀸𑀦 (*paṭṭhāna), borrowed from Iranian. Compare Gujarati પઠાણ (paṭhāṇ), Hindustani پَٹھان (paṭhān) / पठान (paṭhān), Sindhi پَٺاڻُ / पठाणु, Punjabi ਪਠਾਣ (paṭhāṇ) / پَٹھاݨ (paṭhāṇ), Odia ପଠାଣ (pôṭhaṇô), Nepali पठान (paṭhān), Maithili पठान (paṭhān) / 𑒣𑒚𑒰𑒢 (paṭāna), Bengali পাঠান (paṭhan), Assamese পাঠান (pathan).
