Etymology

Of uncertain origin. According to Pokorny, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ner- (to twist, turn), and cognate with English narrow. However, Mayrhofer does not mention this derivation at all, and prefers to derive the root from a t-extension of Proto-Indo-European *h₂nḗr (power, vital energy; man).
