From Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰayH- (“to perceive”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬛𐬌𐬜𐬁𐬌𐬙𐬌 (diδāiti, “to see”), Old Persian 𐎮𐎮𐎹 (di-di-y /dīdiy/, “see”, 2nd pers sg imperative), Persian دیدن (didan, “to see”).
