Inherited from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀟𑀁𑀲 (ḍaṃsa, “biting insect”), from Sanskrit दंश (daṃśa). Cognate with Gujarati ડાંસ (ḍā̃s), Hindi डाँस (ḍā̃s).
