Etymology
Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀞𑁂𑀗𑁆𑀕 (*ṭheṅga). Cognate with Punjabi ਠੀਂਗਾ (ṭhīṅgā) / ٹھینگا (ṭhengā), Nepali ठिङुरो (ṭhiṅuro), Bengali ঠেং (ṭheṅ), Marathi ठेंगा (ṭheṅgā).[1]
ठोसा (ṭhosā, “thumb; stick”) has identical semantics, and may be etymologically related.
