Borrowed from Classical Persian زبان (zabān, zubān), from Middle Persian ŠNA / ʾwzwʾn' (uzwān), from Proto-Iranian *hižwaHh, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́iȷ́ʰwáHs. Doublet of जीभ (jībh) and जिह्वा (jihvā), possibly cognate with English tongue. Compare Bengali জবান (joban), Gujarati જબાન (jabān).
