Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀙𑀺𑀧𑁆𑀧 (chippa) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓𑁆𑀓- (-kka-) + -𑀮- (-la-) + -𑀇𑀓𑀸- (-ikā-), from Sanskrit *छेप्या (chepyā́, “tail”), a feminine form of *छेप (chépa), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *(s)ćáypas, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ḱéypos (“pole”). Cognate with Marathi शेपटी (śepṭī), शेपूट (śepūṭ), Konkani शेंपडी (śẽpḍī, śẽpaḍī).
