Etymology
Of uncertain origin. Likely borrowed from Dravidian; compare Tamil சூடு (cūṭu, “to be crowned, wear on one's head”). Phonetic variation of its descendants and related words make a Munda origin possible as well. An Indo-Iranian provenance is also possible; compare Avestan 𐬀𐬱𐬙𐬀𐬐𐬀𐬊𐬲𐬛𐬀 (ašta.kaožda-, “a type of diadem”).
