Etymology

From चष् (caṣ, to eat), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *čaš-. Cognate with Persian چاشنی (čâšni, taste; taste by way of a sample) whence Turkish çeşni (flavor, taste) and Hindustani - Hindi चाशनी (cāśnī, syrup) and Urdu چَاشْنی (cāśnī, syrup). Georgian ჭაშნიკი (č̣ašniḳi, gustation of wine) comes from Old Armenian ճաշակ (čašak), an Iranian borrowing. Also compare Proto-Slavic *čaša, and diminutives such as Russian ча́шка (čáška), Macedonian чашка (čaška).
