Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Iranian *gátiš (“going, motion”), from Proto-Indo-European *gʷḿ̥tis. Cognate with Avestan 𐬀𐬌𐬡𐬌-𐬔𐬀𐬌𐬙𐬌 (aiβi-gaiti), Ancient Greek βάσις (básis), Proto-Germanic *kumþiz. By surface analysis, गम् (gam, “to go”) + -ति (-ti).
