Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀔𑀟𑁆𑀟𑀸 (khaḍḍā, “hole”), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀔𑀟𑁆𑀠 (*khaḍḍha). Also influenced by *𑀕𑀟𑁆𑀟 (*gaḍḍa, “pit; hole”). Compare Marathi खड्डा (khaḍḍā).
