Etymology
Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a prefixed form of पट (paṭa, “garment”), and/or borrowed from Austroasiatic or Dravidian. Possibly related to कर्पास (karpāsa, “cotton”); in this case, the -pāsa- in कर्पास (karpāsa) is a dialectal form of पट (paṭa).
