Inherited from Proto-Indo-Aryan *wr̥Hmíṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wr̥Hmíš, from Proto-Indo-European wl̥H-mí-s, from *welH- (to turn, coil). Cognate with Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬨𐬌 (varəmi), Latvian and Lithuanian vilnis, Old Church Slavonic вльна (vlĭna), Albanian valë, German Welle.
