From Proto-Indo-European *aws- (“to shine”) (< *h₂ews-), from a stem *awes- (*h₂éwes-). Compare Ancient Greek ἠώς (ēṓs) (< *āusōs), Latin aurōra (< *ausōsā. See also उषस् (uṣás).
