From Proto-Indo-Aryan *īṣát, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *īšát, from Proto-Indo-European *isn̥t, from *is (“a little”). Cognate with Albanian imtë (“tiny, small”), Latvian īss (“short”), Lithuanian įsas and Old Prussian insan.
