Etymology
From आ- (ā-) + लयते (layate, “stays, sticks”), the latter component from the root ली (lī, “to cling, adhere to”), from Proto-Indo-European *sley- (“smooth; slick; sticky; slimy”), related to लिनाति (lināti, “stays, sticks, adheres to”) and cognate with Proto-Germanic *slīmą (whence English slime).
