Borrowed from Northwestern Indo-Aryan, whence ਅੱਡਾ (aḍḍā, “place, stand”), from Prakrit *𑀅𑀟𑁆 (*aḍ, “obstruct, stop”), borrowed from Dravidian, whence அடை (aṭai). Related to अड़ना (aṛnā). Cognate with Marathi अड्डा (aḍḍā).
