Inherited from Prakrit 𑀫𑀕𑁆𑀕 (magga), from Sanskrit मार्ग (mārga). Compare Sinhalese මග (maga), මඟ (maⁿga), Gujarati માગ (māg), Hindi माँग (māṅg, “parting of the hair”), Marathi माग (māg), Sindhi ماڳُ / माॻु, Punjabi ਮਾਂਗ (māṅg) / مانگ (māng, “parting line of hair on the head”).
