Etymology

From earlier *𑤆𑤛𑤳 (*etu),[1] inherited from Prakrit 𑀳𑀢𑁆𑀣𑀺 (hatthi), from Sanskrit हस्तिन् (hastin). Cognate to Sinhalese ඇත් (æt).[2]
