ܣܟܝܢܐ
Classical Syriac
Etymology
From Akkadian 𒄑𒍣𒃶 (/sikkānu/, “oar, steering paddle, rudder blade”), from Sumerian 𒄑𒍣𒃶 (/zigan/, “oar, steering paddle, rudder blade”). This is related to or possibly conflated with the Semitic ܫ-ܟ-ܢ (š-k-n) meaning to stay in place, to be held at rest, and with the Akkadian 𒄑𒆕 (/sikkatu/, “peg, nail, a lock or pin broach, cone, wedge, pyramid, pinnacle, plowshare”) present in ܣܟܬܐ (sekkǝṯā, “peg, nail, spike; ploughshare; coin stamp”). Compare Arabic سِكِّين (sikkīn) and Hebrew סַכִּין (sakkī́n).
