From the root ܚ-ܢ-ܢ (ḥ-n-n) related to pitying. Compare Hebrew חֲנִינָה (ḥănīnā), Arabic حَنَان (ḥanān, “tenderness”), حَنِين (ḥanīn, “longing, nostalgia”).
