Etymology 1
From Middle Persian ʾmbl (ambar, “ambergris”); compare Arabic عَنْبَر (ʕanbar), from which the alternative Syriac forms ܥܡܒܪ (ʿambar) and ܥܢܒܪ (ʿanbar) are derived.
