ܐܒܠܐ
Classical Syriac
Etymology 1
From the root ܐ-ܒ-ܠ (ʾ-b-l) related to mourning; compare Hebrew אֵבֶל (ʾḗḇel). The asceticism sense apparently has its root in the destruction of Jerusalem spawning practices of abstinence from thereunto sacrificed victual.
