Inherited from Proto-Turkic *yapurgak (“leaf”); cognate with Azerbaijani yarpaq, Bashkir япраҡ (yapraq), Kazakh жапырақ (japyraq), Kyrgyz жалбырак (jalbırak), Turkmen ýaprak, Uyghur يوپۇرماق (yopurmaq), Uzbek yaproq and Yakut сэбирдэх (sebirdeq).
