Inherited from Prakrit 𑀘𑀺𑀝𑁆𑀞 (ciṭṭha) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀇𑀓- (-ika-), from Sanskrit *चिष्ट (ciṣṭa, “message”), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *ćiṣṭás, possibly from Proto-Indo-Iranian *čištás, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷis-tós, from *kʷeys- (“to observe”). Cognate with Assamese চিঠি (sithi), Bengali চিঠি (ciṭhi), Gujarati ચિઠ્ઠી (ciṭhṭhī), Hindustani چٹھی / चिट्ठी (ciṭṭhī), Marathi चिठ्ठी (ciṭhṭhī), Nepali चिठी (ciṭhī), and Rajasthani चिट्ठी (ciṭṭhī).
