From Middle Persian *pūdīnag, [script needed] (pūdanag). Akin to Mazanderani پتنیک (petenik), Northern Kurdish pûng (Mentha pulegium), Arabic فُوذَنَج (fūḏanaj, Mentha pulegium). Earlier also *pūtīnag and *pūtanag, whence Arabic فُوتَنَج (fūtanaj), Classical Syriac ܦܘܛܢܐ (puṭənā), Jewish Babylonian Aramaic פוּטְנַק (pūṭənaq), פוּטְנַג (pūṭənag). This etymology is incomplete.
