From يالاڭ (yalang) + ئاياق (ayaq), from Proto-Turkic *yalïŋ adak. Cognates with Turkish yalın ayak, Southern Altai јылаҥайак (ǰïlaŋayak), Kumyk яланаякъ (yalanayaq).
