Etymology
Perhaps ultimately from Sanskrit मगध (magadha), the land of the Buddha, in reference to the people's Buddhist faith and their kings' claim of descent from Magadha. Compare Bengali মাঘ (magh, “Arakanese”), Bengali মগ (mog, “Arakanese”).
