From Middle Persian *maywēz, from Proto-Iranian *madwī-ča-, analyzable as می (mey, “wine”) + an unknown second element. Compare Northern Kurdish mêwîj (“raisins”) and Mazanderani ممیج (mamij, “raisins”).
