From Aramaic מָקוֹק (māqōq), ܡܩܘܩ (māqōq), whence also Ge'ez ማዕከክ (maʿkäk, “tub, laver”), from Middle Iranian *makōk, whence Persian مکوک (makôk), Old Armenian մակոյկ (makoyk).
