Ottoman Turkish
Etymology
Inherited from Proto-Turkic *bālak (“baby animal”), a development of *bāla (“young animal; child”). For the change of initial consonant /b/ > /m/, compare مقره (makara, “pulley”), منتشه (menteşe, “hinge”), منكشه (menekşe, “violet”) and میان (mıyan, “licorice”).
