Inherited from Proto-Iranian *luxšáh, Proto-Indo-Iranian *lukšás, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *lówksneh₂ (moon), derived from the root *lewk- (bright, to shine, to see).

Cognates include Old Armenian լուսին (lusin, moon), Proto-Slavic *luna and Old Latin losna.
