Inherited from Proto-Turkic *kirpi (hedgehog); cognate with Azerbaijani kirpi, Bashkir терпе (terpe), Chuvash чӗрӗп (čĕrĕp), Kazakh кірпі (kırpı), Kyrgyz кирпи (kirpi), Turkmen kirpi, Uyghur كىرپە (kirpe) and Uzbek kirpi.
