From Proto-Turkic *ka- (interrogative particle) + -da (“locative case formant”). Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (qajda, where?), Tatar кайда (qayda), Kazakh қайда (qaida), Kyrgyz кайда (kayda), Crimean Tatar qayda, Shor қайда, Khakas хайда (xayda), Tuvan кайда (kayda), etc.
