Inherited from Proto-Turkic *kïlagu (cutting edge); cognate with Azerbaijani qılov, Bashkir ҡылау (qılaw), Kazakh қылау (qylau), Kumyk къылав (qılaw), Southern Altai кылаҥыр (kïlaŋïr) and Tatar кылау (qılaw).
