فوة

Arabic

Etymology

Uncertain, widespread in the Semitic language family, but considered all descendant of Ugaritic 𐎔𐎆𐎚 (pwt) through likely Akkadian, being considered itself a foreign loan and a hapax; controversially related to Hittite 𒊺𒉿𒁕 (ŠE.BE.DA /puwattis/, color, paint, stain). Compare Hebrew פּוּאָה (pūʾā), Aramaic פּוּתָא (pūṯā), פּוּאֲתָא (pūʾăṯā), Classical Syriac ܦܽܘܬܳܐ (pūṯā), Akkadian 𒁍𒉿𒋾 (pu-wa-ti /puwatu/).
