Etymology
Inherited from Proto-Turkic *sïrtlan (“hyena”); cognate with Bashkir һыртлан (hırtlan), Kyrgyz сырттан (sırttan), Turkmen syrtlan, Uyghur سىرتلان (sirtlan) and Uzbek sirtlon. For the ending, compare آرسلان (arslan, “lion”), قپلان (kaplan, “leopard”) and ییلان (yılan, “snake”).
