From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (ʾspnc /aspinǰ/, “hospitality; inn”). Cognate with Parthian 𐫙𐫘𐫛𐫏𐫗𐫋 (ʿspynj, “hostel, place to stay”) and akin to Classical Syriac ܐܫܦܙܟܢܐ (ʾšpzknʾ, “majordomo; host”), ܐܫܦܙܐ (ʾšpzʾ, “lodging”), Old Armenian ասպ(ա)նջական (asp(a)nǰakan, “hospitable; host”), Old Georgian მასპინძელი (masṗinʒeli, “host”), Iranian borrowings.
