From Aramaic שׁוּקָא / ܫܽܘܩܳܐ (šūqā’, “street, market”), from Akkadian 𒋻 (sūqum, “street”), from Akkadian 𒅆𒀀𒄣 (siāqum, “to become narrow”). Cognate to Hebrew שׁוּק (šūq).
