Etymology

From Middle Persian swhtn' (sōxtan); ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱewk- (white). Cognates with Northern Kurdish sotin, Gilaki سوتن (sutən), Talysh سوته (sute), Baluchi سوچگ (sóčag), Mazanderani بسوتن (basuten), Central Kurdish سوتان (sutan) and Pashto سوختېدل.

Also related to سرخ (sorx, red), and سوگ (sug, sadness, mourning).
