From Byzantine Greek Σαμοθρᾴκη (Samothrā́ikē), from Ancient Greek Σᾰ́μος (Sámos, Samos) + Θρᾴκη (Thrā́ikē, Thrace), from the island's early Greek colonizers and the general ancient territory in which it lay.
