From Proto-Semitic *riʾat- (“lung, breast, chest”); cognate with Hebrew רֵאָה (reʾá, “lung”), Classical Syriac ܪ̈ܲܐܘܵܬܵܐ (raˀṯā), Ugaritic 𐎛𐎗𐎚 (ỉrt), Akkadian 𒃮 (iratu).
