From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (hwʾlbʾl /⁠xwārbār⁠/, food and drink), a compound of [Book Pahlavi needed] (hwʾl /⁠xwār⁠/, food) + [Book Pahlavi needed] (bʾl /⁠bār⁠/, fruit); compare Manichaean Middle Persian 𐫟𐫇𐫀𐫡 𐫀𐫇𐫅 𐫁𐫀𐫡 (xwʾr ʾwd bʾr /⁠xwār ud bār⁠/, food of all kinds). Akin to Old Armenian խորբար (xorbar), Old Georgian ხუარბალი (xuarbali), Georgian ხორბალი (xorbali), Iranian borrowings.
