Relative adjective (nisba) composed of جُمْهُور (jumhūr, multitude, general public) + ـِيّ (-iyy), probably calqued on Latin rēs pūblica (republic), literally "public thing". Compare جُمْهُورِيَّة (jumhūriyya, republic).
