جامكان

Ottoman Turkish

جامكان

Etymology

Borrowed from Persian جامه‌کن (jâmakan, dressing room, wardrobe). The meanings shop window and vitrine arose due to an incorrect conviction that the first element of the word derived from جام (cam, glass), instead of جامه (came, cloth).

Noun

جامكان • (camekân)

  1. changing room, dressing room, a room in a hammam designed for people to change their clothes
  2. shop window, display case, show window, a large window behind which items for sale are displayed
  3. vitrine, a glass-paneled cabinet or case, especially for displaying objets d'art or china
  4. (by extension) any space eclosed with sides of framed glass, like a stormhouse or a greenhouse
